Sam So realizing that the only way to really show that we have improved is to perform the song we failed at in the beginning, that is what we are going to do. The group is going to perform the song Say Something for the final product before or after our power point presentation. Say something was our first attempt at a song and it did not go well. I am writing in a harmony part for it which contributes to the final goal. I know that over hte course of Megan, I did not acheive the group goal, but i did achive a personal goal. I believe that acheiving this personal goal was a form of sucess for me, as I went on a musical journey through music writing, composition classes, and music festivals and auditions. RachelDuring the course of this project, I can say that I broadened my musical horizons more than I have in the past. I have learned many things about singing in a trio - one of those things being that it can be pretty difficult. There were many obstacles throughout this whole project. For example, finding songs with parts that were in a doable range for everybody in the group. In many cases, the parts would be good for one person and two high or low for another. Another obvious obstacle was scheduling problems. While this project did not go how I expected it to go, I can still walk away feeling like I learned a little bit more about singing in a trio and had fun while doing it.

Sam Our project honestly has been very unsuccesful at this point. We still however plan on delivering a song for our final product and we may do "say something" which would show the growth from beginning to end. I have attended a music festival and gotten accepted into another during the process which I believe has helped me grow as a musician, so I feel that I suceeded as an independent musician, but our tria ultimately failed. I will talk a lot about this during our presentation and how we could have done better and what we were lacking as a group.
Sam This week we considered many new songs and mostly sang through a collection of different pieces. The christmas season has had a lot of influence on the type of music that we are looking through, however we are also considering more contemporary music for our final product. The final product is not looking to be a song that we have written which is upsetting that we cannot meet our goal, but we still plan on singing a song. Yesterday was my opera recital and I believe it was a major success. My Voice teacher was really happy with my performance and so was I. The performance was also my first opera performance so I would consider it my opera debut.
Sam This week we are posting Joy to the World on our home page along with the other songs. It took many trying attempts but we managed to produce and pretty good sounding recording. We were still having blending problems when we recorded and the harmonies became hard to hold for some people, but we used our sight singing abilities to help each other out and ultimately get a good recording. We used our resources this week by using the practice rooms that are connected to the band and chorus room. Using the practice rooms was a good way to practice and find a place and time in smart lunch and we will definitely do it again. My opera recital is next week and I am very excited. I will be singing the art song "Caro Mio Ben" for a small audience. Zack This week we have finally gotten a chance to get together and sing Joy to the World and we should be posting it on the website soon. A couple of our biggest issues at the start of practicing was blending and harmony. We all had trouble with our individual parts and putting them all together made it worse. We were able to overcome these issues by helping each other individually. We also had issues making our parts sound good together without one person's voice being more audible than anyone elses. We were able to fix this and come together and make our voices blend very well.
Sam This week we used our resources to practice joy to the world. We mostly practiced on our own but still tried to keep up with our own harmonies. I will now be singing the soprano part in my Tenor range because Rachel preferred to do the alto part due to the extent of her own range. Practicing went well but we discovered our issues with blending our sound and making less of a soloist sound and more of a mixed voice product. This mixed sound is what we are shooting for when we eventually come out with our final product. Another activity that I am doing personally is preparting for an opera recital that I was invited to sing at. This opera recital allows me to better myself as a musician and get classically trained. Today I attended a master class for the recital where I sang a song and was critiqued in front of and by my peers. It was intimidating but I felt very benefitted and in my element. I also attended the NCMEA Honors Choir and felt so honred to be able to participate in such a magical and life changing experience. I learned many new skills and techniques that will benefit me for years to come.
Sam This week the Christmas season is coming upon us so we decided to choose a Christmas song and do three part harmony. The song that we chose is ¨Joy to the World¨ and we have decided to the the famous first verse. We found rehearsal tracks online which are really beneficial to us. I am planning on singing the alto part in my baritone range. This will allow the harmonies between me and the tenor part to be closer and sound more polished. The soprano part may be slightly further away from the rest of the harmonies which could possibly sound different than we intend it to but we will find out when we practice. I have also taken 2 music theory classes as of now and I have learned many new things that I never really knew before which really halps with the music composition part of our project. Zack This week we decided to go ahead and pick our first song to record together. In the spirit of Christmas we have decided to do the first verse of the song "Joy to the World". We have each chosen our part in the song and I have chosen tenor because it is well within my range and it goes very well with the alto and soprano parts. I have a found a tenor track that has been helping me learn the song and the harmonies. I have been having a decent time learning the song so far. There seems to be one part that I've been having trouble with towards the end. I can easily do this section by myself but when I try to do it with the other parts I seem to struggle. I found out that I was going to high on a note and I have fixed this and I'm now ready to record! You should see the song posted on this website later this week.
SamThis week went quite slow and we didn't really accomplish anything because our schedules are so tight. 2/3 of us have completed our solo songs at this point, but after that we mostly have gone silent for this week as we have so many conflicting scedules and we did not plan ahead. THese upcoming weeks in the second half of the project will be crutial in making a comeback and creating a success from this project. For my solo song I chose "skinny love" by Birdy. This song means a lot to me and has helped me through hard times and so I enjoyed singing part of it for this project as it is in my range and has a mysterious tone and evokes emotion from the listener. Sam This week we met and recorded an improv song together. In this one we just spouted out words that we were thinking and did them to a specific pitch. Some of the pitches worked together and some didn't but we are all really just trying to get used to working with each others voices. some chords worked better than others. My favorite personally was when we did the "taekwando" part. Disclaimer: none of the subject matter reflects our personal feelings towards our english homework. I have signed up for music theory classes on saturdays to go along with my private voice lessons which I am hoping will help better me as a musician. RachelSamThis week we recorded solo songs and did peer edits and gave each other helpful suggestions. Our first song 'Say Something' fell through and we were not able to accomplish it because it did not sound good with our voices with dissonance galore. We decided to scrap it which is kind of late but we are peer editing and sharing our expertise with one another and we will upload both our solo songs and an improv melody during week 5 of the project. RachelThis week, I recorded my solo song so I could get it out of the way. I did one of my favorite songs (that is especially appropriate for spooky season), Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday. I chose this song because it challenges me by pushing my range higher than my comfort zone. This week, we will also be getting together to film an improv session and upload it along with the solo songs to make up for the first 4 weeks of nothing being posted.
SamAs of now we have made some decent progress. We recorded our song some and are in the editing stage of it which means we will finally move away from that song and into more challenging territory. To keep ourselves in check we are going to do solo songs for week 4. This keeps us accountable and fresh so we know what we are doing and don't get too repetitive. The solo songs will be posted for week 4. With this progress we are dead on track to accomplishing our goals and are ready for new challenges. I have also auditioned for the North Carolina Honors Chorus which was a huge challenge that I have prepared for for a long time and I am hoping for a good outcome. ZackRafael |
